Ultimately, Records Management ensures that institutions’ vital records, historical, fiscal and legal value are identified and preserved. training workshop on Records Management for both Senior and Junior Staff of the ministry. The main thrust of the programme was to build the capacity of staff of the ministry in RecordsManagement for efficient and effective service- delivery. Giving her Keynote Address at the Opening ceremony, the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Emma Kowa Jalloh, described Records Management as key to promoting effective service delivery and affirmed her ministry’s determination to promote a sustainable Records Management System in the sector. Proper Records Management, she said will no doubt, enable the various units in her ministry to keep and manage vital information and other reliable data, thereby promoting effective management of the country’s fisheries resources.
She pointed out that the aspect of maintaining a reliable records management system as a major aspect in her ministry development has been overlooked over the years. Stressing on the importance of the system, the minister urged the participants to take the workshop seriously. “It is the will or ability to do, give and take” she added and entreated staff of the ministry to cooperate with her in ensuring that H.E. Brig. Rtd. Julius Maada Bio’s New Direction Agenda and the ministry’s goals are realized.

In his statement, the Deputy Minister of Fisheries Ibrahim Turay, described the Fisheries sector as “dynamic “noting that they have made frantic effort to streamline the statistics unit of the ministry and hoped the training programme will add value to the ministry’s operation. The Director of Fisheries, Kadijatu Jalloh, informed the gathering that the ministry had a very effective Library at kissy Dock yard which was vandalized and gutted down by fire during the rebel war and expressed confidence that the initiative will help restore the ministry’s past glory. She said the ministry is currently grappling with emerging issues such as Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (I.U.U.) fishing and inaccurate data, adding that the training programme will boost the ministry’s documentation process.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Elizabeth Ellie underscored the fact that Records Management has been one of the major challenges facing the ministry, saying that the ongoing Commissions of Inquiry are not only about embezzlement of funds but also look at issues on poor records management and documentation. She said, the Ministry through it dynamic leadership, thought it fit to undertake the training programme so as to build the capacity of its staff for effective service delivery. Facilitators were drawn from the Accountant-General’s Office, National Public Procurement Authority and Audit Service–Sierra Leone. Members of staff who benefited from the training exercise, thanked management of the ministry for what they described as an unprecedented initiative and promised to use knowledge gained for the development of the ministry.
